Rhododendron is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia, although it is also widespread throughout the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. It is the national flower of Nepal. Its showy flowers are delightful
Rhododendron ponticum has become invasive in Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is an introduced species, spreading in woodland areas and replacing the natural undergrowth. R. ponticum is difficult to eradicate, as its roots can make new shoots. Rhododendron is extremely toxic to horses, with some animals dying within a few hours of ingesting the plant
